Should Nook crib mattresses always be used with a Fitted Crib Sheet?
It's your choice! Although Nook's crib mattresses do not require fitted sheets, the use of standard fitted sheets might prolong the life of your Crib Mattress Cover.
What are the major differences between Nook's crib mattresses?
The Pure crib mattress is Nook's organic and natural option made of coconut coir, natural latex and is protected with a wool fire barrier. The Dream Cotton crib mattress is made with 100% upcycled cotton denim and protected with a Freudenberg Non-Toxic Fire Barrier. The Breeze crib mattress is made of Certi-PUR foam designed with strategically placed inner air channels and protected with a Freudenberg Non-Toxic Fire Barrier. The Air crib mattress is made of Certi-PUR foam and protected with a Freudenberg Non-Toxic Fire Barrier. The Lite crib mattress is made with highly regarded Certi-PUR foam, BPA-Free plastic from recycled water bottles and is protected with a Freudenberg Non-Toxic Fire Barrier. Price points vary with materials.
Why did Nook create the Dream Cotton?
While the Breeze, Air and Lite meet the needs of many households, we know there are families who prefer a non-toxic option that is also foam free. The Dream Cotton fits the bill.
What makes the Dream Cotton so special?
Using up-cycled denim sourced here in the USA, the Dream Cotton offers all the safety and breathability Nook is known for while repurposing trusted jean material that would otherwise be sent to the landfill.
Why is upcycled Denim a good material for a crib mattress?
One of the many benefits of denim is its breathable, yet structured twill weave. This construction allows the mattress to be firmly structured (best for spinal development) while air can move freely, guaranteeing that fresh, oxygen-rich air always surrounds baby (best for brain development).
What is the difference between upcycled and recycled?
Great question! Recycling means to turn waste into a reusable product or to refurbish a product for reuse. Upcycling, a particular form of recycling, involves turning waste material or an unwanted product into a better-quality product or purpose. Upcycling is the process of transforming a material into something new that offers a better value while making a positive impact on the environment. And what is better than a super safe and comfy place for babe to sleep?
Where does Nook source its upcycled Denim?
Here in the USA!
Do the Pebble Twin and Full Mattresses need a box spring?
A box spring is not needed as long as the mattress is on a flat surface. We recommend the use of a platform bed with the Pebble Twin and Full mattresses.
Are Nook crib mattresses available in sizes other than "US standard" size?
Our crib mattresses are designed to fit snugly in any standard US crib. Nook’s crib mattresses are built to the larger variance of U.S. standard cribs to provide a nice snug fit. To ensure the longevity of your Nook mattress, we recommend using a crib with a platform, wood slat or solid base. We do not recommend the use of spring-based cribs. We don't stock other sizes, but we can make custom sizes, so please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to tell us what size you want. We'll give you a price quote and estimated delivery date.
Do I need a mattress pad with Nook Mattresses?
It's up to you! Nook Crib Mattress Covers serve as sheets and a mattress pad in one! The patented fabric technology prevents liquids, dirt and other "messes" from seeping through the surface fabrics, eliminating the need for mattress pads. It's hypoallergenic, antimicrobial and water resistant.
Can I use non-Nook sheets with Nook Mattresses?
Your choice! All Nook products are designed to work in concert as a sleep system to create best-in-class breathability, non-toxicity and convenience. Using sheets over the Crib Mattress Cover may compromise these benefits.
Can I use a Nook mattress Cover on a non-Nook mattress?
The Pebble, Dimple and Print mattress covers are specifically cut and sewn for Nook mattresses and are not designed to be used on any other mattress. Nook mattress covers and mattress cores are a part of a sleep system designed for breathability, airflow and comfort.
Do Nook mattresses come in other sizes besides crib, twin and full?
Nook Sleep Systems specializes in baby and child products; however, we do offer custom sizes. Please contact us at email@example.com for a quote.
How do I protect the crib mattress core during potty training?
Potty training may bring larger messes than the Nook cover is designed to handle. When it comes to the potty training, how to handle your child's specific needs is a decision for parents. You may choose to add a pad, use training underwear, or whatever works best for your child.
What belongs in the crib when my baby is sleeping?
Short answer: nothing. According to the guidelines for infant safe sleep as established in 2011 by the American Academy of Pediatrics, a baby is to sleep on their back, on a firm mattress, alone in a crib that is devoid of bumpers, blankets, stuffed toys, etc. Additionally, Nook recommends that parents and caregivers routinely examine the crib for any other extraneous or loose items that could present a safety hazard.
Should infants sleep face down on their Nook crib mattresses?
No. Nook advises parents to follow current medical recommendations; for maximum crib safety, doctors now believe that infants should sleep on their backs.
What is the recommended age or weight range for children sleeping on the Nook's crib mattresses?
Your Nook crib mattress is appropriate for infants and children up to 4 years old or until they reach 50 lbs. Nook's Twin and Full Mattresses are perfect solutions for your child's first "big kid" mattress.
Will Nook products help prevent SIDS?
The causes of SIDS remain unclear and are still being researched. Experts believe SIDS may be related to low-level toxins found in some nurseries, but there is no definitive research to support this. In 2008, a medical research study from UC-Berkeley and Kaiser Permanente indicated that ventilation in a nursery may significantly reduce the occurrence of SIDS. Because SIDS may be related both to overheating and accidental asphyxiation, Nook is committed to maximizing natural airflow and breathability throughout its product line.
My child is allergic to wool/latex. Can he sleep on Nook's Pebble Pure Crib Mattress?
Components of the Pure Crib Mattress contain certified organic wool and natural latex in layers beneath the mattress cover. While neither of these materials come in direct contact with your child's skin, we stronly encourage you to consult your child's pediatrician for more information on your child's allergies.
Are Nook crib mattresses and other products tested for compliance with health and safety guidelines?
Yes. All Nook products comply with Federal and State CPSC testing requirements.
Why is breathability so important?
Research shows that a sleep environment rich in oxygen is critical for cognitive and physical development in infants. It also helps them sleep longer and deeper. Nook applies this knowledge in all products by facilitating better airflow in and around the crib and by ensuring smarter temperature regulation at naptime and nighttime.
What is off-gassing and why is it important to prevent this in the nursery?
Synthetic materials can release chemicals into the air through evaporation. For instance, you might smell a harsh odor from other crib mattresses made with plastic or vinyl layers. That's off-gassing, and it can be toxic to infants. Nook uses only non-toxic materials to ensure that nursery air is cleaner and safer for infants.
What are the benefits of creating a healthy & non-toxic crib environment?
A healthy crib environment eliminates chemical by-products, like off-gasses, that can pollute nursery air. You want your infant to breathe only the healthiest, cleanest air.
Are all Nook materials organic?
No. Nook carefully considers the performance, health, safety and price benefits of organic materials versus non-organic materials. Organic isn't always the best choice for each component—or for your budget. But Nook ensures that any material that touches your baby is as natural as possible. Nook's entire product line, from material selection through manufacturing and packaging, is entirely non-toxic.
Are Nook products hypoallergenic?
Yes. Nook champions materials that cause fewer allergic reactions in infants, featuring all-natural certified organic cotton and wool, eucalyptus, and zinc.
Are natural fire retardants as effective as chemical ones?
Yes. Natural fire retardants are tested against the same federal mandates as chemical ones to ensure they are just as safe and reliable.
Why the pebble pattern?
The asymmetrical pebble pattern increases air circulation over, around and through the mattress cover. Air travels through the valleys between the Pebbles making a more breathable sleep space for infants. And because no two pebbles are the same, every infant can find a unique and comfortable nook.
What certifications do Nook materials have?
Nook products are certified by a number of agencies. Find out more about on our Certifications page.
